He was a German genre painter, cartoonist, and illustrator who also worked as an illustrator of children's books. Schmelzer received his education with Julius Hübner at the Royal Saxon School of Applied Arts Dresden. After his studies, he worked in Dresden as a cartoonist and book illustrator. His works have been published in the Gazebo since 1859 and later found their place in the True Jacob in the 1890s. His life ended in 1909 in the city hospital Dresden-Johannstadt.
