Racial issues are addressed in this character-driven story of two brothers. Southerner Earl Pilcher (Robert Duvall) learns his biological mother was black and that she died during his birth. In a letter written by the recently deceased woman who raised him, Earl discovers he also has a half brother, Ray (James Earl Jones), who is black and living in Chicago, and seeks out Ray, who to Earl's surprise knows about him already, and is not exactly thrilled about the family ties, either.
