Description: This exquisite Werregue Palm basket (now a sustainably harvested material) was Handwoven by Wounaan Indigenous Women from the Choco region located on the Pacific Coast of Columbia. With a history of expert weaving techniques already ingrained in the Wounaan culture, this style of basketry was believed to have originated in Botswana and subsequently introduced to the Wounaan people by Missionaries in the 1970’s. From there, the skilled Wounaan craftswomen were highly successful and turned these Werregue Palm baskets immediately into an icon among Colombian handicrafts. This particular basket features iconic Wounaan imagery that has a Pop Art aesthetic in its featuring of animals, plants and people.
