Phelan Jr. Collection is a well known collection of art from the Mid West to Western American frontier. Phelan was been drawn toward images containing little action and less bombast, many made by people simply trying to record what they saw. This painting features an anonymous artist’s depiction of a dogtrot house which, according to the info label on the back was in Edwardsville Illinois in 1857. The dogtrot, also known as a breezeway house, dog-run, or possum-trot, is a style of house that was common throughout the Southeastern United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some theories place its origins in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Some scholars believe the style developed in the post-Revolution frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. In the painting a woman sits on the porch step in her best dress as a man seems to be courting her or professing his undying love for her. He lays on his side and tips his cap to her as if gesturing some romantic remarks. A wonderful mid western American School work featuring a conjoined dogtrot yes with a quaint romantic element to it. One can certainly see why this was in such an esteemed collection of American Frontier artwork. The painting is signed J. S. (DEL). Del being the abbreviation of the Latin “Delineavit”, meaning “J. S. (Drew this). Or painted this picture. Condition: Pale staining/Toning. Moisture stain near upper right. Otherwise good.
