Description: I’m a retired photojournalist. Like many photographers, I always searched for the best clothing — those having multiple pockets — that also worked under tough shooting conditions. If I found something that functioned especially well, many times I’d buy duplicates. Originally, I’d purchase specialty clothing, and if they didn’t meet my specific needs, they ended up hanging in my closet. Now, I’m selling all these specialty clothes, including my vintage Ex Officio, along with my extensive bush jacket collection. During my first three days shooting in the Yucatán jungle, in what turned out to be a 12-year book project photographing Mayan pyramids, I realized my “expedition” clothing wasn’t going to cut it. They would never dry completely, thus were always uncomfortable, and soon started to chaff. Disgusted, I flew back to Colorado, and outfitted myself completely with a brand called Ex Officio. I didn’t know anything about the company except they had a certain cachet with other travelers I’d met. After that, I experienced no clothing problems for the next 12 years. They packed small, worked well in the field — dried quickly, cleaned easily — and were also presentable for dining out in Mérida. Since they worked so well, throughout the ensuing years I’d buy much of Ex Officio’s new offerings. Their clothes were well-designed, looked good, and were durable. I’m still wearing some of these clothes 25 years later. I bought the original Ex Officio adventure-travel jacket when it was first introduced in the summer of 1997, right before I returned to the Yucatán. This jacket was a classic that performed flawlessly, and withstood the rigors of the Yucatán. Over the years, Ex Officio released new improved versions of this jacket, with the same general pattern, but with new materials and pocket innovations. I would then buy one, and test it out. I call this jacket the Model 2.0 version of their classic adventure-travel jacket. This one is made of polyester, with a light tan/white rip-stop pattern, so it feels much lighter. It has the same two flap chest, two flap bottom bellows pocket front. The innovations here are all four front pockets have a second walled interior pocket — with direct top entry underneath the flap pockets on the top two, and behind the flaps on the bottom two. Now, this was useful when I was shooting film, as I could quickly drop the exposed rolls in the inside part, while keeping the new rolls secure in the flapped section — so I would immediately know which was which. Both bottom bellow pockets are durable, and could hold 15 rolls each. Another innovation is both hand-warmer pockets are secured by velcro, making them safer. The top chest pockets are wide and roomy. However, the greatest innovation with this jacket are two deep diagonal chest pockets behind each of the top flap pockets (see photos). Another interior vertical pocket is located inside the zipper flap. The back has a large flapped pocket in the lower section which is perfect for holding the sleeves, which zip off. The inside right of the jacket has a slashed upper pocket to hold (at that time) airline tickets, and a large zippered lower pocket, ideal for safeguarding your passport and currency. The left inside has a small outdated flapped cellphone pocket on the bottom, and a vertical zipped pocket on the inside, behind the zipper. Plus, there is a square open-top pocket on the top of the back, near the label. This is a functional 2-3 season jacket depending on climate. Currently, I am using mine for my early morning walks in the mountains where it can start out cold, but warms up quickly as soon the sun rises. It’s perfect for this quick temperature shift because of the lined mesh inside on the upper back, and along both sides of the front. There are vents located in the upper back, that work well in hot weather. There is an adjustable waist cord, and the sleeves zip off, and can be stashed in a lower back pocket. The abbreviated epaulets are now perpendicular to the shoulder line instead of following it, but still keep a camera strap anchored. I bought two of these and am now selling this one. Measurements: Armpit to bottom of hem — 19.5.” Armpit to sleeve bottom 19.5.” For your next adventure, this jacket will get you through the airport effortlessly, and out working in the field in no time. Enjoy your journey
