Originally modeled as a full-length seated figure, Mignon depicts the title character from the popular opera comique of the same name by the French composer, Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896), which debuted in 1866 and was based on Goethe's novel of 1796, Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship).
