BINDING: Original paper boards..Originally written in French, Mysteries of Paris was a one-of-a-kind publishing phenomena in France. Issued serially in 90 parts in Journal des débats from 19 June 1842 until 15 October 1843, making it one of the first installment novels published in France [Taylor]. A runaway bestseller, it attracted the notice of Karl Marx who wrote a serious review. Contemporary authors described long queues of eager readers awaiting each chapter installment at Paris's many booksellers and stalls. Readers were fascinated by what amounts to a soap opera today, but at the time offered a frank and forbidden exposé of wealth and poverty in Paris. .Two competing editions were offered in the United States in 1843. The present Deming translation, published by New World Press. And the Harper & Brothers edition, a different translation, which is typically credited as being the first American Edition, and was probably offered in book form prior to this serialized version, though only by a matter of weeks or months.
