Description: Ethiopia. Frontispiece to The Highlands of Ethiopia by Johann Martin Bernatz (1802 – 1878). Chromolithograph 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Bernatz was a German artist who accompanied an expedition to Egypt and the Holy Land, and in 1842 he visited Africa led by Captain William Cornwallis Harris to Sehela Sellase, the king of Shoa. The present color lithograph was the frontispiece to The Highlands of Ethiopia by Harris published in New York by J. Winchester in 1844. Some minor chipping and tears closed on the verso using archival conservation tape. Dramatic coloring, and quite suitable for framing or to replace a missing frontispiece in a first edition.
