Description: Condition Continued: There's one tiny corner loss (far from the print) and one corner was produced a little long and folded in. Some of the bottom page edges are cut a little shorter than most of the others. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind, NOT ex-library. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The folding frontispiece appears to have a similar reinforcement (very inconspicuous, almost makes me wonder if it was produced that way), also two smallish stains off its outer edge, away from the map which is in very good shape. There's a water stain 4.5" x 3" off the top corner of the two plates (28 figures) that end the book. It doesn't affect any other page in the book. No other water stains. There is no foxing anywhere. The plates are preceded by a page titled Corrigenda, which references and provides corrections for seven errors, though not the 'M.' for 'H.' Maybe the 'M.' is for 'Monsieur' although he was German, not French. 254 numbered pages (+1) + 2 plates. Maclachlan, Stewart, And Company, Edinburgh, 1843. Hardcover. Written by H. (Hermann) Schlegel. Translated by Thos. Stewart Traill. First English Edition (NAP, 1843 on the title page). Once listed, this will be the Only original English Edition for sale anywhere on the Internet. The original edition in French was published in 1837 (Essai Sur La Physionomie Des Serpens). I found only two copies of the 1837 French Edition for sale on the Internet. It consisted of two volumes, the First Volume is referenced as the Atlas volume. It contained '21 uncoloured plates, three double page maps, one double page table, and one large folding table.' The Second is referenced as 'Partie Descriptive' (Texte). Both sellers of the French Edition possess only the Atlas Volume. One of them is a library copy ($800.00), the other is not ($2,100.00).To give you a sense of the contents of the English Edition, here are some partial quotes from the 'Preface By The Translator': 'After having read most of the published works on Ophiology, never meeting with any satisfactory system, until "Essay" by M. Schlegel (should be 'H.' not 'M.', makes this mistake several times). I would willingly have published a translation of the complete work but the low state of Ophiology in this country deters from undertaking so large a work with such costly illustrations as 421 figures, three separate charts, and two tabular views of their distribution and affinities. The Translator has therefore restricted himself to the General portion and has selected from the excellent plates of his Author 24 figures, to which he added two. The fear of too much enhancing the price of this volume has prevented the republication of more than one of the charts-- that which shows the Geographical Distribution of the Venomous Snakes. The Syoptical Review of Species, in the present publication will in some measure supply the want of the more ample Descriptive Part of the Original. The Translator has added an outline of M. Schlegel's Arrangement of the Species, with the principal habitat of each individual affixed.' If you desire any further information on the contents you can contact me.
