Info from comixjointβ> Commies from Mars _ 1973-1987 / Kitchen Sink - Last Gasp _ It took 14 years to produce the six-issue run of Commies from Mars, but everything that followed the inaugural issue was worth the wait. After the first issue was published by Kitchen Sink in 1973, the series took a six-year hiatus before Last Gasp wisely resurrected it for five more issues. The Last Gasp books deliver post-Star Wars socio-political commentary from a broad range of artists and writers. Commies from Mars was edited by Tim Boxell and featured solid contributions that didn't read like other comics at the time. It is perhaps the only comic featuring Elvis Presley's dead penis talking about a Las Vegas comeback. One of the joys of the series are the remarkable front covers provided by John Pound (issues 2, 3 and 4) and Kenneth Huey (issues 5 and 6). Though none of the issues sold well enough to earn a second printing, the series has aged very well and maintains a small but dedicated circle of fans and collectors, of which I am one. It seems likely that I will return to this overview some time in the future to expound on the virtues of this series in greater detail. In the meantime, don't hesitate to collect all six issues, especially the last five. Commies from Mars #1 _ Only Printing / March, 1973 / 36 Pages / Kitchen Sink _ The first issue of Commies from Mars was not entirely reflective of the content that appeared in subsequent issues after the title was revived in 1979. For instance, there is a major Barefootz story by Howard Cruse in this issue, and Cruse did not reappear in any later issues of the series. Nor did Steve Stiles, Bill Crawford or Grass Green, who also contributed stories here. Which is not to say this comic suffers greatly from these anomalies. Commies from Mars #1 is a very amusing read. But the series really begins to assume a much more remarkable personality with the second issue. _ HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES: Kitchen Sink printed approximately 10,000 copies of this comic book. When the book was printed, the interior pages from the first part of the print run were assembled out of order during the binding process. There were about 3,000 copies of the book assembled out of order, with an undetermined number surviving in the collectibles market (they are pretty rare). The assemblage of interior pages was corrected for the final 7,000 copies of the book, which is the version that is commonly found. The comic book has not been reprinted. _ COMIC CREATORS: Tim Boxell (aka Grisly) - 1, 5, 6, 8-12, 29-32 Peter Poplaski - 2 Steve Stiles - 3-4, 7 Bill Crawford - 13-17 Howard Cruse - 18, 20-28 Richard "Grass" Green - 19 Steve L.
