Description: This is a very hard to find Limoges calling card receiving tray. The decorator backstamp is Elite and not sure of the manufacturer backstamp. This piece also has initials and date of March 1901 which I would assume was the decorator however given the type of item this is I also think it could have been signed by the owner. Calling cards were very popular in France and the popularity spread to the US during the Victorian period. The cards would be used by the upper class to announce one's arrival and collected by the servant and put in the tray. The tray would then be delivered to the intended recipient or if they were not home the tray would be held at the door until they returned home. It was a very formal process! The tray measures almost 7.5 inches long and about 4 inches wide and stands about 2 inches. This is a heavier porcelain and overall it is in great condition with no issues to note. It has nice yellow floral design with raised gold accents. This is a must have item for any Limoges collector. It is real nice piece of history! Thanks for looking and be sure to check out my shop, not2shabbyshop, for more Limoges and other great finds!
