Description: El Lissitsky Beyond the Abstract Cabinet Published 1999 Lazar Markovich Lissitzky is widely known as a Russian avant-garde artist who made significant contributions to abstract art in the 1920s. This book documents for the first time his explorations of photography, photomontage, and graphic and exhibition design during that decade and throughout the 1930s. Both the political and aesthetic aspects of Lissitzky's multimedia work are analyzed, from the photographic experiments that preceded the abstract Cabinet of 1927 to his involvement with Soviet propaganda publications shortly before his death in 1941. The author and two contributors give special attention to Lissitzky's intense collaboration first with German and then with Soviet photographers, designers, and filmmakers, examining how his various friendships and acquaintances influenced the directions he took in these fields. The book presents photographic works by Lissitzky and his contemporaries as well as some of his early nonobjective art, which foreshadows his figurative experiments. Lissitzky's correspondence with his Western colleagues and his wife, Sophie Kuppers, sheds light on both his personal relationships and his artistic life under the Soviet regime. This book has been published in conjunction with an exhibition of Lissitzky's photographic works at the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, and the Museu Serralves, Porto. Margarita Tupitsyn, an independent scholar and curator, is the author of The Soviet Photograph, 1924-1937, published by Yale University Press. Matthew Drutt is associate curator for research at the Guggenheim Museum. Ulrich Pohlmann is director of the Foto Museum in Munich. Copublished with the Sprengel Museum Hannover
