Description: This rare and nice example of a late 17th Century Japanese porcelain figural jug/ewe. Made in Arite, Edo period. Excellent deep cobalt blue colouring and well decorated with 3 panels of figural scenes. The feature scene with 2 men under a parasol and a deer / farm animal beside them. The other 2 panels decorated with landscape scenes - birds, water, buildings. The remainder of the jug embellished in scroll & foliate motifs. Just over 21cm high. Lacking its pewter cover. Large chip & associated hairline to the mouth. No restorations. Spider crack (3 leg) to the body/shoulder. Crack to the base, which itself protrudes slightly beyond the foot (sits slightly skewed because of this). Heavy crazing, possibly hiding further hairlines.
