Description: Scarce early original cash toll receipts for the Golden Gate Bridge and Carquinez Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge receipt is not dated but tolls for 25 cents began in Oct, 1955. The Carquinez Bridge receipt of 25 cents is dated Jan. 31, 1948. Bridge tolls for the Golden Gate began at the modest sum of $0.50 each way, with a five cent charge for more than 3 passengers. In 1950, the fare dropped to $0.40 and by 1955, it was $0.25 each way! But in 1968, a southbound toll of $0.50 was instituted, with the northbound trip free of charge. Today, that southbound trip is $3.00. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County, bridging both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Carquinez Bridge is actually two bridges. The original crossing opened in 1927, and to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic flow on Interstate 80, Caltrans in 1958 constructed a parallel bridge to function as the eastbound span. The original span was replaced in 2003 by a graceful new suspension bridge, which carries westbound vehicular traffic across the Carquinez Strait as well as bicycles and pedestrians on a bicycle and pedestrian pathway. Both toll receipts are in excellent condition with no tears or creases. Please email with any questions and please "VIEW SELLERS OTHER ITEMS". Thanks.
