Description: Roland de Lassus born 1532, was a composer of the Franco-Flemish school, towards the end of the Renaissance. He was listed as an “altar boy” as a child singing in the choir of the church. He studied singing and more generally music, until the age of twelve, when he moved to Sicily and later Milan to study music. In 1555 he returned to the Netherlands and his first works were published in Antwerp in c1555. In 1556 he joined the court of Albert V. of Bavaria in Munich. In 1563 Lassus was appointed “Kapellmeister “in Munich. He was nicknamed the “Divine Orlande” (Prince of Music), becoming famous he played for Emperor Maximilian, Pope Gregory XIII knighted him, and he was invited to the Royal Chapel by King Charles of France. Lassus’s health began to decline in 1590s and he died in Munich in 1594. During his life, he wrote more than 2,000 works, with 1600 signed or attributed with certainty. Roland de Lassus is considered the greatest musician of the Renaissance, and this card chronicles a “Statue of Roland de Lassus, Kidnapped by Germans”. It is in excellent condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image and reverse.
