Description: Extremely rare, early American front focusing wet-plate camera for 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" images Circa late 1860s - early 1870s, possibly made by American Optical Company. The ground glass frame is stamped "AM Optical Co. and serial number 7", one other number 7 is found on the front top of the front standard, no other identification marks are found on the camera. This is a front focusing camera, with detachable focusing frame in front. The ground glass area measures 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". Camera features swinging rear standard. The camera body is in great condition. The square bellows are in amazing shape. There are some colodition stains on the bottom of the rear standard. Camera comes with Darlot Paris landscape lens with cap and 3 aperture discs (not pictured). Lens glass is in fine condition. Superb historically significant camera is in excellent condition. Will make a great addition to any serious collection.P.S. The ground glass in image 3 does NOT have a crack, it's just a reflection of silver reflector.
