FRAMED: 31 X 25 INCHES CANVAS 18 X 24 INCHES Donald (D.S.) Shreves (1918 - 1993) was active/lived in California, Colorado, Nebraska. Donald Shreves is known for Indian genre, portrait and figure painting.Donald Shreves was born in Nebraska and started out painting at an early age doing caricatures of family and friends. His grandmother noticed his talent and enrolled him while he was still in primary school at the Denver Art College. He progressed quickly even though he was the youngest pupil by far. He was eventually selected as one of 10 American pupils to attend art school in Munich, Germany in 1938. He enlisted in the Army while living in Denver in May 1942.Shreves was unable to complete the full year in Munich due to the start of WWII when he had to return to the United States. He would then begin study at The Art Institute in Chicago. Mr. Shreves was drafted into Signal Corps and served through WWII. Before Shreves was discharged he had his appendicitis and they used a spinal tap with a preservative which was experimental at the time. The preservative in the spinal tap led to him becoming a paraplegic within a couple of months after the surgery. Although the Military denied that the spinal tap had anything to do with the surgery, Shreves researched the topic and prepared helped prepare his case for restitution. Don Shreves won his case and was awarded enough money to buy a house in Silverlake, California and paint for the rest of his life. He has won numerous awards including the Newport Beach best of show for his painting "I believe" after the Elvis Presley tune which was popular at the time. He also won honorable mention for an entry at the California Art Club annual show.Mr. Shreves often did not sign his work or only initialed it D.S. because most of his work stayed in his personal collection until after his death.
