DON BUDGE - AUTOGRAPH - HFSID 78432 DON BUDGE The tennis legend pens his signature in blue ink on this page Signature: "Don Budge". In blue ink, 5x6. Tennis great Don Budge (1915-2000) was the first player ever to win tennis' Grand Slam: Wimbledon, the U.S., French and Australian Opens (1938). He then turned professional and played mostly head-to-head matches, as there was no professional tour at that time. Budge was ranked No.1 in the world for five years. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force to serve in WWII, and in 1943, tore a shoulder muscle that did not hinder his military service but effectively ended his reign as tennis' No. 1. After his retirement, he coached and conducted tennis clinics for children. The Associated Press named Don Budge 1937's "Athlete of the Year", and he became the first tennis player to ever be voted the James E. Sullivan Award as America's top amateur athlete. Budge was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1964. Very lightly toned at edges. Paper residue at ragged top edge from removal from album. Fine condition.
