Description: Rare original antique engraving from an 1870s French illustrated journal. It depicts the now extinct foundation breed for the Boxer dog, the Bullenbeisser, also known as the German Bulldog or bouledogue allemand. It was a breed of dog known for its strength and agility. The breed was closely related to the Bärenbeisser (some believe that the two breeds were the same; the names mean "bull-biter" and "bear-biter," respectively), and was an ancestor to the modern Boxer breed. It was, in all its aspects, similar to the present Alano Español (Spanish Bulldog) and very alike to the Dogo Argentino, not only in aspect, but also in usage. There were two regional varieties, the Brabanter Bullenbeisser and the Danziger Bullenbeisser. The breed is now extinct. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture area fills about half of the page and measures about 7 x 8 inches, with a French caption below. The text on the page could easily be trimmed before framing, or hidden under a window mat. The page has some light stains in the outer white margin. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition.
