Author Biography John Dewey was born on October 20, 1859, in Burlington, Vermont, to a poor family. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1879, then attended Johns Hopkins University. Dewey spent two years teaching in Oil City, Pennsylvania and a year in Charlotte, Vermont, before deciding that elementary school teaching wasnt for him. He accepted a faculty position at the University of Michigan from 1884 through 1894, then joined the newly formed University of Chicago from 1894 until 1904. In 1899, Dewey was elected president of the American Psychological Association, and in 1905, president of the American Philosophical Association. He was a member of the American Federation of Teachers and taught philosophy at Columbia University until he retired in 1930. During his career, Dewey published more than 700 articles and 40 books. He was married to Alice Chipman, with whom he had six children. His second wife was Roberta Lowitz Grant. He died on June 1, 1952, at the age of 92.
