This is an original 1998 paperback by Deborah Kuhn McGregor: " From Medicine to Midwives --The Birth of American Gynecology". 273 pp. It is in very good condition. Except for my signature on the page opposite the front cover, the pages are unmarked. Please look at the photos. It measures ~ 9 x 6 x 0.75", and weighs ~ 1 lb 1 oz. Deborah Kuhn McGregor (1944-2020) was a professor of history and women's studies at the University of Illinois in Springfield. This book centers on the career of J. Marion Sims, at one time hailed "The Father of American Gynecology". He did indeed standardize a procedure to cure vesico-vaginal fistula, and created the Woman's Hospital of the State of New York in 1855. The darker side of the history is that he perfected his technique by operating without anesthesia on plantation slaves in Alabama during the 1840s, and later on poor Irish women in New York. Most biographies of Sims were hagiographic; there are at least three statues of him in public squares in the USA. This book presents a more nuanced view of a complex personality. I will ship U.S.P.S.
