De Kooning Mentee / Abstract Expressionist by Don Bernardo Localio / 24”

Description: For your consideration is a 2012 painting by the incredible abstract expressionist Donato (Don) Bernardo Localio. (Signature at bottom, with 2nd signature, date and title on verso.) Born in 1954 in Princeton, New Jersey, Localio received a BFA from the U of Houston in 1978 and a MFA from the Maryland Institute of Art, Baltimore in 1980. Localio became a personal friend of Willem de Kooning, who went on to become his mentor. Localio’s work is RARELY seen at auction. He’s had several one man shows, and toured extensively throughout the globe. His works have shared showings with de Kooning, Motherwell, Noland, and Caro, amongst other greats. The subject of this artwork is a classic Localio abstract, inclusive of the wonderfully contemporary color scheme for which Localio is famous. We have deep sea blue, black and white as our our backdrop, upon which Localio places an almost impossible array of colors and brush strokes. An amorphous shape hovers off the board. Only Localio can navigate the thin line between hectic, convoluted mess and beautiful, balanced artwork. His preparation, application, and technique are superb, and leave the viewer content and energized for the next one to come. This artwork is titled “Perspective” (on verso). It measures 24” across and is. approximately 1” deep. Localio employed oils on wooden board for this piece. The artwork is in excellent shape with no conditions to note. This painting is not framed, well, technically speaking. There is a thin white strip of wood circling the board, giving it additional depth on the wall and acting as pseudo-housing. A wire is installed on back, so this piece is ready to be hung. Artwork is heavy given it is on wood board. Shipping price reflects heavier weight. Provenance: Purchased from a private estate in Charleston that had an enormous Localio collection. Minimal prior ownership.
