Bigelow is an American artist born in 1949 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He received both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in the early 1970s from the University of Michigan, where he specialized in printmaking and drawing. With a passion for art that began at the age of four, Bigelow has dedicated his life to the craft. Over the years, he has taught at several prestigious colleges and universities across the United States and currently serves as a professor of art at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri.In 1980, he established Bigelow Studios, which has allowed him to showcase his etchings and drawings across the U.S. and internationally, often through juried art fairs. His work, known for its technical complexity and intricate detail, often features animals as central figures, paired with humorous titles that offer insightful commentary on the human condition.Bigelow is committed to making his art accessible. His pieces are sold unframed and are sized to fit standard frames for ease of display. Each etching is an original work of art, created through a meticulous printmaking process: a metal plate is covered with an acid resist, and the image is drawn in reverse with a metal tool. The plate is then etched in acid, which dictates the depth and darkness of the lines. Ink is applied to the plate and then wiped away, leaving the ink only in the etched lines. The plate is pressed onto paper using a printing press, producing the final image. Each print is hand-colored with watercolor, signed, and numbered by the artist.
