Description: Here's a carte de visite, 2 3/8" x 4", image showing the republican party's (barely) victorious presidential candidate from 1876, Rutherford Hayes. We say this was the closest election yet since it was only resolved after a long, convoluted process starting out in the U.S. House of Representatives over disputed vote counts coming in late. It was way worse than 2000 since there were no chads and modern technology. After an Electoral Commission voted along party lines in early March 1877 to give the disputed electoral votes to Hayes and William Wheeler, democrat Samuel Jones Tilden lost in the Electoral College by a single vote. Hayes was even sworn in early since many thought the March 4 Inauguration could become violent. Since this photo doesn't note him as "President" Hayes, it is an image of him likely distributed for the fall election campaign. But we weren't around then so can't personally verify this. However, as proof of our theory, someone wrote their name on back and dated it November 6, 1876, which was the day before Election Day! It is in nice condition, but please enlarge our images to judge this for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. Remember, folks, this stuff's called ephemera because it was made to be used and then thrown away. So we're just happy to have things like this survive history in any condition so we can add it to our collections. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence. We'll be happy to combine S & H costs on multiple purchases. Shipping on this will be $4.50 carefully packed with tracking. 5634
