Description: The Temple of Nature or the Origin of Society by Erasmus Darwin, author of The Botanic Garden, of Zoonomia, and of Phytologia. Facsimile edition published in 1973 by Scolar Press. "Reproduced (original size) from a copy in the Glasgow University Library, by permission of the Librarian. In his Poem The Temple of Nature Erasmus Darwin gave his views on life's evolution from microscopic creatures in primeval seas to its present complexity in human beings. The poem was published in 1803, a year after his death, at a time when his evolutionary views were quite unacceptable in either literary or scientific circles. The poem was generally condemned for its irreligious tendencies, and did not enjoy the great popularity of his previous poem The Botanic Garden, published in 1791.Darwin's worst sin, in the eyes of his contemporary reviewers, was his failure to give God proper credit for the continual creation of species. The Temple of Nature has not been reprinted in Britain since 1825..."
