The 1968 World Series pitted the American League pennant winning Detroit Tigers against the defending World Champion St Louis Cardinals, who had whipped the New York Yankees in 1964 and the Boston Red Sox in 1967, were seeking their third championship in five years. The Cardinals took a 3-1 Series lead, but Detroit won the last three games. In a fitting climax to "the year of the pitcher," when hurlers completely dominated the game, Mickey Lolich (winner of two earlier games) outdueled Bob Gibson (winner of 2 earlier games and three games of the 1967 Series). WILLE HORTON scored the first run with two outs in the seventh inning, with BILL FREEHAN doubling in an insurance run two batters later. Thirteen Cardinals and six Tigers have signed this ball. Included are two Hall of Fame outfielders, AL KALINE of the Tigers and LOU BROCK of the Cardinals. Other stars include BILL FREEHAN, the slugging Tigers catcher; Detroit outfielder WILLIE HORTON, who along with Kaline and Brock was the batting star of the Series; powerful Cardinal first baseman ORLAND CEPEDA, and center field defensive wizard CURT FLOOD, whose refusal to accept a trade at the end would later change baseball forever. A nice sampling from a classic World Series. Toned. Signatures lightly beaded but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
