Description: From what I have read the Currier & Ives 1868 American Homestead prints and metal trays depicting the four seasons The New York firm of Currier & Ives, founded by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, produced these prints. Currier & Ives produced both the iconic prints and the metal trays featuring scenes from the four seasons. The New York firm, produced over 4,000 lithographs across various genres, including landscapes, portraits, and history. Their images were initially monochrome, later hand-colored by women working from home. These prints capture a nostalgic glimpse of American life during the 19th century. First Currier & Ives made 1868 American Homestead on metal trays of Winter & Summer in 1868 when they made the prints. Then they made the trays of Spring & Autumn trays in 1869 when they made those prints. The reason the year on all four trays says “1868” is likely due to the popularity and recognition of that specific year in the “American Homestead” series by Currier & Ives. Even though the scenes depict different seasons and were created in different years, the trays may have been marketed together as a set, emphasizing the iconic year 1868, the beginning of the “American Homestead” series. Twentieth-century trays might use different materials, such as plastic or other metals, due to changes in manufacturing techniques and availability. These rectangle trays I found to resemble the ones made in the 1960's or early 1970's based on the border that resembles dark brown paneling, they measure approximately 14.75 inches in length by 11 inches in width and approximately 5/8 inches in depth and they are metal. There are places with what looks like maybe rust, blemishes where paint faded or rubbed away from use and they do need some gentle cleaning with warm water and mild soap. There are dimples in the metal that is hard to see on the scenic side but are more visible on the back side that I noticed on the Summer tray. I tried to capture them in the photos but failed. So, there could be dimples and flaws that I missed. These would still be a great addition to any Currier & Ives memorabilia collection. Please look carefully at all photos for this listing is sold as is. Your purchase will help the blind community in our area. Thank you for supporting The Blind Community Thrift Store.
