Description: GREAT BRITAIN – Sc #100 – 2p – LILAC – USED – 1884Subject = Queen Victoria Sc # = 100 Value = 2p Color = Lilac Date = 1884 Condition = Used Hinge Remnant = Yes Cancel = Not that bad for an era were heavy cancels are common. Faults = None My Grade = VF – This stamp meets or exceeds all the centering requirements for a VF, the color is good and there are no faults. The distances between the framelines and perfs are as follows: Right side = 0.2mm-0.3mm Top = 0.1mm Left side = 0.3mm Bottom = 0.4mm-0.5mmBasis for Valuation = Even though there is a measurable distance between all the framelines and perfs, I don’t believe the top margin meets the “clear of design” requirement needed for the premium in comment #3 thus this premium will not be applied. Adjusting the F-VF valuation in Scott to a VF valuation I get a valuation of $115. I am however leaving my asking price at the F-VF in Scott.Comment = One thing I have learned is that for earlier issues of stamps is that is important to check for both valuation guidance as well as grading guidance presented in Scott’s catalogue. Such guidance provided by Scott that is relevant to this stamp is as follows:#1 - “Values are for unused and used stamps in this country are for examples with fresh color and all the attributes for a Fine-VF condition (unless specified otherwise) through 1900 (Sc #126).”#2 – Expect perforations to touch the design on one or two sides on all engraved stamps and early small format typographed stamps because of the very narrow spacing between the stamps in the setting of the plates. The photo of a G.B. stamp in the grade of VF from this period shown on Page 18A of Scott’s “CLASSIC SPECIALIZED CATALOGUE OF STAMPS AND COVERS 1840 – 1940 – 2021 edition” clearly demonstrates that touching the frameline is exactly what is meant. #3 – For examples of 98-107 with margins clear of the design (frameline) on all four sides, add a 50% premium to the listed value.
