KEYWORDS: Edmund Crispin, Bruce Montgomery, Gervase Fen, Mysteries, Oxford, Golden Age, Swan Song, Love Lies Bleeding, Buried for Pleasure DESCRIPTION: From the dustjacket flaps: Spirited amateur sleuth Gervase Fen starred in nine highly original, often hilarious mysteries. This baffling threesome is the next installment in the series. In Love Lies Bleeding, Professor Fen has been invited to address the boys of Castevenford High School during their annual Speech Day ceremony. But before he can do so, an alluring young schoolgirl disappears. a poisonous acid is stolen from the science lab... and two of the professors are shot dead! The headmaster enlists the help of his old friend, the detecting don, whose curiosity is piqued by a note left in one victim's room and a piece of blotting paper left in the other's. Students, faculty, and an ancient bloodhound named Mr. Merry-thought help Fen expose the truth! In Buried for Pleasure, Fen decides to switch from academia to politics and runs for Parliament. But while campaigning in peaceful Sanford Angelorum, he becomes embroiled in the murder of Andrea Lambert, a former prostitute who was being blackmailed. Terrified, she had told her husband and gone to the police-and the following day her fate was sealed with a box of poisoned chocolates! Investigating Detective Inspector Bussy wants to share some vital information with Fen, but his throat is slit before he can reveal it. Besieged by a peripatetic pet pig and a parson's poltergeist, the unflappable Fen must put his political aspirations on hold to fit together the pieces of a double murder! In Swan Song, not one highbrow is creased with care at the gruesome sight of opera star Edwin Shorthouse's gin-soaked corpse swinging slowly from a hangman's noose. When Oxford don Gervase Fen is called in to investigate, he discovers that the fiendishly lecherous Shorthouse had enraged every member of the company. Another suspicious death reveals a clue that helps the fearless Fen solve a brilliantly executed locked-room murder. This is the second of three volumes of Crispin's nine novels featuring the Oxford Professor of Language and Literature, Gervase Fen, a roguish and clever amateur detective, when he can get out of his teaching duties. Fen's adventures span more than forty years in nine novels and several dozen short stories, and are some of the cleverest and most amusing tales in the canon. CONDITION: Dustjacket in nice shape, a couple of slight nicks along the top of the jacket, mostly at the spine, a few small spots of wear on the front cover, overall very sound. Brown cloth spine over brown boards. Interior is clean and unmarked, although there are a few faint age spots on the base of the text block. An excellent copy of the second volume of this Mystery Guild collection of the Fen tales. FROM THE BOOKSELLER: Thank you for visiting the Dactyl Books eBay Store!
