Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) ERECTING SHOP, LONDON AND NORTH-WESTERN RAILWAY WORKS, CREWE.Crewe was once a small village; now it is a borough town, and its growth is identified with the vast works of the London and North-Western Railway, the largest establishment of the kind in the whole world. They were commenced on quite a small scale in 1843: now they occupy 118 acres of ground, of which 36 acres is covered by buildings, and the number of hands employed exceeds seven thousand. All the works are traversed by railway lines. Our view represents the great building in which the engines, already constructed in parts, are put together or erected. Mr. F. W. Webb, chief locomotive engineer of the company, and known throughout the world for his celebrated "compound locomotive," has supreme control of all.
