Description: Coral Bark Dogwood, (Siberian Tatarian Dogwood), Cornus alba sibirica, Shrub Seeds Fast Growth, Showy Flowers, Fruits and Bark, Fall Colors, Winter Interest, Attracts Birds and Butterflies, Wildlife Food/Shelter, Hedge/Screen Cold and Deer Tolerant Cornus alba sibirica is a Tatarian Dogwood cultivar that is noted for its brilliant red stems in winter that are particularly showy on sunny days with snow on the ground. It is a fast growing, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub that grows to a maximum size of 4 to 7 feet tall on erect, usually unbranched stems. Tiny, yellowish-white flowers appear in flat-topped, 2.5 inch clusters, in late spring, with sparse, intermittent, additional flowering sometimes continuing into summer. Flowers give way to clusters of bluish-white drupes in summer. Fruit is quite attractive to birds and is generally considered to have as much if not more ornamental interest than the flowers. Ovate-elliptic, medium/dark green leaves to 4.5 inches long, turn reddish purple in fall. Red winter stems gradually turn darker as spring approaches. Not a preferred meal for Deer or Rabbits. Tatarian Dogwood is similar to Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea/stolonifera), but generally does not spread as aggressively. Synonymous with and sometimes sold in commerce under Cornus alba Westonbirt. Other Names: Coral Bark Dogwood, Tatarian Dogwood, Cornus alba Westonbirt, Siberian Dogwood, Red Barked Dogwood, Red Twig Dogwood Zone: 2 to 7 Growth Rate: Fast Plant Type: Multi-stemmed Deciduous Shrub Family: Cornaceae Native Range: Northern Russia to Korea Height: 4 to 7 feet Spread: 3 to 5 feet Shape: Rounded Bloom Time: May to June Bloom Color: Yellowish-white Sun: Full Sun to Part Shade Fall Color: Showy Reddish Purple Drought Tolerance: Low Water: Medium Maintenance: Low Site Requirements /Soil Tolerances: Best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of a wide range of soils. Prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils. Culture: Trim roots with a spade and promptly remove root suckers if colonial spread is undesired. Best red stem color occurs on young stems. Although pruning is not required, many gardeners choose to remove 20-25% of the oldest stems in early spring of each year to stimulate growth of new stems which will display the best red color. As an alternative to annual pruning, some gardeners prune all stems close to the ground in early spring every 2 to 3 years to renew. Any loss of flowers through spring pruning is not terribly significant since the small flowers of this dogwood are rather ordinary. Uses: Naturalistic plantings in moist soils where plants are allowed to spread and form thickets. Property line screens. Hedges. Shrub borders. Foundations.
