Caprice (I) 2:00 Song (II) 2:15 March (III) 2:35 Notes to the Director: THREE PIECES FOR WINDS was adapted and rescored for modern symphonic band from an extended work written in 1960 by the composer. Each of the three movements is in a contrasting compositional style: CAPRICE (I) is based on quartal harmonic textures, SONG (II) is triadic-modal in style, with a prominent ostinato figure, and MARCH (III), is built on polychords around a tonal center of Bb Major. However, the strength of the suite lies in its forceful melodic content, rather on any esoteric compositional technique. The metronome markings should be adhered to for best effect and clarity of sound. Although faster tempi on the first ad third movements may generate additional excitement, the ensemble precision may suffer as a result. This piece was published in 1978.
