They replaced the Gazettes that were minted during the Russo-Turkish alliance (1798-1807). Their correspondence to the decimal system was: (until 1835) 4 lepta = 1 obol, 100 obols = 1 Spanish dollar (8 reales). Made of pure copper (coming from captured Turkish cannons), with a weight of 5 drams and a diameter of 30 to 33 mm, depending on the edition. The coin in question, struck in 1831, has a diameter of 30 mm. 1,223,000 copies were struck in the first Greek Mint, which was founded in Aegina and set up, for obvious reasons, in the garden of the Governor's house! Made of pure copper, its weight was 12.99 grammes and its diameter 28 mm. The dies for this coin, as for all of Othon's coinage, were made by the celebrated engraver Voigt in Munich. This system lasted until May 14th, 1928. The drachma continued as a monetary unit, but with a weight of 5 grams in accordance with the specifications of the Latin Monetary Union (Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland), of which Greece became a member in 1868.
