Recorded in Amsterdam, the orchestra's acoustically perfect home base, the set features Haydn, Berlioz, Dvorak, and Stravinsky, all of which are characteristic of the orchestra's classical performances. Colin Davis established a good relationship with the Concertgebou Orchestra soon after his debut in 1966. Davis gave the orchestra a lot of freedom, but also controlled them well, which made him very popular. The first recording was eight years later. Beethoven's Violin Concerto (with Arthur Grumiaux) and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique were widely praised for their rhythmic quality and the humble dignity that characterized Davis' conducting, especially his recording for Philips, which was made at his home base, and which was marked by warmth and clarity. This was followed by artistic and commercial success, shedding new light on Haydn's later symphonies. Davis' sympathies are evident in the light rhythms, refined 18th-century phrasing, and usual joy of his symphonies. The "Paris" Symphonies (except No. 85) were followed by the complete "London" Symphonies (Nos. 93-104). This set also includes No. 84, which Davis recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra at Oiseau-Lille in 1960. This is also the first time that Davis and the Concertgebouw Orchestra's Haydn symphonies have been released together. His highly acclaimed recordings of Dvořák include the composer's last three symphonies, the Violin Concerto (with Salvatore Accardo) and the Cello Concerto (with Heinrich Schiff). Throughout his long career, Davis has particularly enjoyed bringing out the nostalgic aspects and Czech rhythms of Dvořák's music, and his keen approach to Stravinsky is also evident in his recordings of the three ballets. These recordings are popular and have never disappeared from the catalog, but listening to them together will remind you of the strength of Davis' partnership with the distinctive and remarkable Concertgebouw Orchestra. Haydn's Symphonies Nos. 84, 86, 87 and 88 (Decca) are released on CD for the first time, and Dvořák's Romance with Salvatore Accardo is released on CD for the first time. Original jacket design.
