It is native to western North America and is also known as Douglas-fir, Oregon pine, and Columbian pine. Coast Douglas-fir (P. menziesii var. menziesii), Growing Instructions: Place the seeds in a bowl of water and let them soak for 24 hrs. This is called scarification and it allows the hard seed shell to be penetrated by water to start the germination process. After soaking, place the seeds on a paper towel and allow them to dry for another 24 hrs. Place the seeds inside a moist (but not soaking wet) paper towel inside a plastic bag. You don't want the seeds to mold. Refrigerate seeds for around 30 days in order to create a sense of dormancy. This is called stratification and it usually results in a higher percentage of germination. Wash small pots and fill them at least 6 inches deep with coarse potting soil. Drop the seed into a hole that is about 2-3 inches deep and cover with soil. Keep the pots in an area that is around 70 degrees F and keep the soil moist. If needed apply fertilizer that has a low nitrogen content. After seedlings start to grow, thin them out so that there is only one seedling per container. Increase pot size when needed. Mature trees are (H x W) : 40?-70? x 12?-20? so plan accordingly when spacing plants near each other. If you plan to use for a privacy screen, they can be planted closer together, and cut down when they are overcrowded.
