Description: Extremely Healthy 6-8" Cutting - Just place tip in soil and it will easily root in a couple of weeks. Common Names: Spinach Tree, Tread Softly, Cabbage Star, Chaya NOTE: Chaya, aka "Mayan Tree Spinach", is the ultimate in "Guerrilla Gardening", growing food that doesn't look like food; growing food "under the radar", so to speak! It is a beautiful, low-care landscaping plant that is also delicious, and an extremely nutritional addition to the dinner table. More Info: The plant is originally found on the Yucatan peninsula, but can now be found in the Southern, Central and Northern America, where the leaves are eaten. Chaya is a little known leafy green vegetable of dry regions of the tropics. Chaya was introduced into Cuba, and from there into Florida. In South Florida it is often found as a rank shrub, but seldom is appreciated for its food value as a vegetable. Chaya is a large, leafy shrub reaching a height of about 6-8 feet. Each leaf is 6-8 inches across and is borne on a long slender petiole (leaf stem). Chaya blooms frequently and both male and female flowers are borne together at the end of long flower stems. The plant prefers a well drained soil with not too much water and lots of sun. The tiny flowers are white, and the plant can be reproduced both by seeds and cuttings. Height: 6-10 ft. Flowers: Blooms repeatedly, Bloom Color: White/Near White. This plant is attractive to bees and butterflies. This plant is one of the best butterfly attractors in my garden! Zebra Longwings love this plant. All day long butterflies and a host of other nectar drinkers visit this plant- GREAT for that reason alone. Flowers are very fragrant with a nice spicy scent! Foliage: Grown for Foliage, Evergreen, Shiny/Glossy-Textured, Succulent. CULTURE: Full Sun to Partial Shade Irrigation: Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not overwater. Propagation: If you want to propagate from cuttings don't put the cuttings in water. Just put them in a place away from the sun and cold winds for 3 day so the cut dries. Then place tip in the ground or pot- very easy to root. Rooting directions: Just place tip in the ground or pot, it roots very easily.
