Description: Cleopatra VII, Egypt, 80 drachma, diobol, 51-BC - 30 BC, Ref. SNG Copenhagen 419-421, Svoronos-1871, Cleopatra VII reigned from51-30 BC, and was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt. Lifetime portraits of Cleopatra are always scarce and in demand, especially those that offer a reasonable condition portrait. The 80 drachma and 40 drachma are believed to be the coins that show that lifetime portrait. Also, unusual is an ancient coin with a denomination mark. The Greek letter pi, in the right field of the reverse, stands for 80 bronze drachma. The obverse shows a portrait of Cleopatra VII, facing right, hair pulled back in parallel paits, and tied in a bun at the back. The plaited hair, and hair bun still show detail, and the profile, with nose, ear, jaw, and hairline nicely visible. The reverse shows an eagle, of the type seen on many Ptolemaic coins, standing left on a thunderbolt, with a cornucopiae before it. The lettering on the reverse would say "of Queen Kleopatra". This is a genuine, original coin, not a copy, replica, or reproduction.
