And the Colt Model 1841 rifle. RARE! Markings: Stamped "6539" on grip and dated on ricasso "1861" Saber bayonet for the United States Navy Model 1862 Merrill rifle and Colt Model 1841 rifle, used during the Civil War. The bayonet has a a cast brass hilt and a recurved, single-edged blade in the Yataghan style. Excellent Condition, Great Aged Patina. Perfect example of first manufacture of the US Navy Bayonet Yataghan Double Curve for the Naval Merrill Rifle. 30" total length, 25 1/8" blade. All cast brass ribbed grip with handsome aged patina, rifle-bayonet locking mechanism works. Beginning of manufacture for this Merrill Navy Saber Bayonet was in 1861 and end of manufacture was in 1865. The specimen below is dated 1861 on the ricasso of the blade and has serial number 6539 stamped on the grip. Blade is made of steel and is a ribbed grip made of cast brass. The bayonets secure and release rifle receiver spring works perfect. Has a fantastic aged brass patina. It's been noted elsewhere that Colt's conversion of the Model 1841 rifle aka the "Mississippi Rifle" added a special bayonet lug to the Model 1841 rifle so the long M1862 sabre bayonet would fit on them. This rare bayonet is illustrated and described on page 123 of "THE AMERICAN BAYONET 1776-1964" by A.N. Harden. The description notes that this bayonet also fits the Model 1841 Mississippi Rifles modified to accept a saber bayonet.
