Description: This listing is for an original copy of the important Anti-Slavery Book Compendium of the Impending Crisis of The South by Hinton Rowan Helper (New York: A.B. Burdick, Publisher, 1860), 8vo, wraps, 214pp & ads. Light foxing, but otherwise tight, clean, and in very good condition. Note: This book, first published in Baltimore in 1857, was a strong attack on slavery, and was distributed widely by Horace Greeley and other abolitionist leaders in the North--infuriating Southerners. One historian, George M. Frederickson, argued that "it would not be difficult to make a case for "The Impending Crisis" as the most important book, in terms of political impact, that has ever been published in the US" Along with Harriet Beecher Stowe's book Uncle Tom's Cabin, the book stirred a very heated political debate in Congress--a major cause of the Civil War.
