Description: The 38th Iowa Volunteer Infantry was mustered in 1862 and suffered enormous losses due to typhoid fever & malaria during the siege of Vicksburg and at Port Hudson, Louisiana and Brownsville, Texas. Later called "The Martyr Regiment" it was consolidated with the 34th Iowa Infantry, serving to the War's End including the Siege of Mobile, Alabama. An Original Civil War Certificate attesting Martha Sholtz, the Widow of Henry L Sholtz, Co C 38th Iowa Vol Sergt, has appointed EB Quiner of Madison, Wisconsin as her representative to collect his back pay. The Certificate is signed January 5, 1865 by Mrs Henry Sholtz, in faint blue pencil, and by two witnesses acquainted with her and in ink by Dane County, Wisconsin Court officer. Henry Sholts' wartime letters to his wife Martha are full of wonderful content and are preserved in the Kenosha, Wisconsin, Civil War Museum.
