Comery of Waldoborough, Maine as Captain, Company A, 21st Maine Infantry, dated September 10, 1862 and signed by Governor Elihu Washburn and Secretary of State, Joseph B. Hall. Comery, apparently born in 1820, participated in operations against Port Hudson March 7-20, 1863, duty at Baton Rouge till May, the advance on Port Hudson, May 20-24, the action at Plains Store May 21, the siege of Port Hudson May 24-July 8, the assaults on Port Hudson May 27 and June 14. And the surrender of Port Hudson July 8. His unit was ordered home July 24 and was mustered out August 25, 1863, at the expiration of their term. Later life was apparently hard on Comery. The 1880 census lists him as a fisherman. He is then listed in an 1887 list of government employees as a janitor in the U.S.Shipping Commissioners Building and in 1900 (he would have been $80) as being granted a revised pension of $40.00. I got this commission from Mike Eckard in 1993.
