Description: The full title of this rare and beautiful volume is CISTINEAE. THE NATURAL ORDER OF CISTUS, OR ROCK-ROSE, and consists of xx pages of front matter, 112 hand-colored engraved plates with two pages of text description for each, and a three-page index. The half-morocco leather binding features raised ribs lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine. The decoration is made up of stamped and gilded rose buds. The top edge of the text is dusted in gilt. The volume measures 6 1/2" by 10" by 1 1/2". CISTINEAE was written by Robert Sweet (1783-1835), an English botanist and horticulturalist who published a number of illustrated works on plants cultivated in British gardens and hothouses. Each of the 112 plates illustrates a variety of rock-rose and is accompanied by text giving a taxonomic description, instructions for cultivation, and where the plant was recorded and drawn. Good to very good condition. Half-morocco leather binding with raised bands decorated in gilt on spine is in good condition with only a little cracking at the top of the spine; light soiling on the silk inset fabric; wear and bumping on the corners of the boards. Marbled end papers have a slight stain from a removed book plate on the front and a small bookseller's plate pasted in the back. Text pages and hand-colored engravings have scattered foxing and offsetting. Colors of plates are bright. A detached pink ribbon appears to be original. The spine is cracked at the Advertisement page.
