Yeager later trained military pilots to become astronauts, and served in various command posts until his retirement from the Air Force in 1975. His profile boosted by his portrayal in the 1979 book The Right Stuffand its 1983 film adaptation, Yeager became a well-known celebrity endorser, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985.
