Rod Piazza A California native who helped form Bacon Fat with former Muddy Waters harpman George Harmonica Smith, Piazza only started garnering wide notoriety in the 1990 s. After twenty-five years of hard work, it was the nineties that the band truly took off. Two studio records were released. "Blues in the Dark" in 1991 and "Alphabet Blues" in 1992. The turning point was 1993 when the band's "Live at B.B. King's Blues Club" won the NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors) Award Winning Album of the Year. In 1998 the band received six nominations at the W.C. Handy Awards which are considered the blues equivalent of the Grammy s. And Rod walked away with the Best Instrumentalist - Harmonica award. The band was nominated for four awards in 1999 and four in 2000. The Mighty Flyers also won Blues Band of the Year in both those years. The Blues Instigators A four member band that has extensively toured the Midwest, performing songs on the funky side of the blues. They are a party-rocking band with a great repertoire of old and new blues songs to keep your toes tapping all night. REZENSION Review from Shades of Blue Shades of Blue Reviews Rod Piazza Chicago Blues Jam at Buddy Guy's Legends The Chicago Blues Jam series is set in Buddy Guy's Legends, a club that has become as celebrated as its namesake for providing Chicago with some of the highest quality blues talent to be seen anywhere. This DVD series, of which Rod Piazza (along with The Blues Instigators as "support") is the first volume) brings you a slice of the great club atmosphere, with interviews and commentary by Buzz Kilman. Piazza is one of the great harp players, equally at home on both diatonic and chromatic harp, adding rich and soulful vocals to the mix; he is undoubtedly the star of the show but the whole band contributes enormously to the enjoyment of this club performance. This DVD gets to the heart of the quality of the band's live appearances, and the interview with the man himself is as laid back and interesting as you would expect. Particular highlights for the Shades site are the Piazza take on 'Rockin' Robin', (a site favourite ever since it first appeared on the "Harpburn" album) and the Miss Honey piano boogie solo (with a little help from percussion/drums) - we always knew that Honey Alexander could play, but this was a revelation, as well as cracking good fun; it got one of the best audience responses of the night. We don't get the opportunity to see these typical Stateside club performances very often, so this DVD, and the others in the series, is a welcome addition to the somewhat limited supply of blues and soul to be found on DVD in the UK. Inevitably, given the limitations placed on the recording by the venue, the sound quality isn't up with the very best, but it does effectively get across the atmosphere and feel of the club venue. Store for Music should be congratulated for giving us the opportunity to see (and hear) some of the best in modern day blues live performances.
