Description: Chaya aka tree spinach is a perennial that is fast growing and super easy to grow. WE ONLY SHIP IN THE CONTINENTAL USA and due to the state certification requirements WE CAN’T SHIP TO CA or AZ. You will receive 3 cuttings. Pot and soil not included. Will be wrapped in a wet paper towel and wrapped in plastic. Leaves somewhat coarser in texture and Leaves tend to be deeper green than maple leaf variety. The leaves should be cooked for 20 minutes, to eliminate possible toxicity. It's excellent on your plate as greens, or included in soups, stir-frys and casseroles. Discard the stems before cooking. When cooked, the young leaves and shoots of tree spinach are consumed as vegetable as it is rich in protein, calcium, iron, carotene, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid." Many tropical leafy greens can have a thick succulent texture to them, and one of the great characteristics of this is that the leafs have a texture that are much closer to spinach, but slightly thicker so that when you cook them, they don’t shrink as much. This trees a fast grower, and can grow up to 8 ft tall, and about 6 ft wide. You can keep it pruned back for a smaller and more compact tree. It prefers full sun, but can do just fine in partial shade. The little white flowers are more plentiful with more sun and attract all kinds of pollinators, from bees and butterflies to hummingbirds. This is an easy plant to share- just break off a piece and pop it in the ground to start a new one. It can tolerate poor, sandy soils, and drought conditions so it’s a great “pioneer plant”. You can also heavily prune this plant and chop and drop the stems and leaves to build up your soil. It will freeze back if you live in a cold area, so it's best to keep in a container to move indoors unless you live in zone 9 or higher.
