He is best known as a regionalist landscape painter and etcher. Longabaugh, who was born in 1884 and died in Libertyville, illinois in 1944, painted in his studio, which still stands, on Park Avenue in Grayslake. He traveled, painted and exhibited throughout Mexico and the United States. Longabaugh's landscape paintings reflect his regional interests along with his works that were inspired by his traveling. It was written that he was so popular back in his day that his landscape and street paintings sold "wet" from the easel. Not only did he paint in oils, but he did many watercolors and etchings as well. Charles Longabaugh was educated at Wheaton College and the Chicago Art Institute. He taught for several years in Lake County schools and was president of the Lake County Art League for two years. He died in June, 1944 at the age of 59.
