Description: For sale is an exceptionally rare twelfth edition of A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1845. 167p.p. This rare copy, being the first edition of Dickens’s return to Chapman and Hall, is bound without plates and titlepage, and with the margins slightly wider. We believe this to be a trial copy, or reading copy, as there are annotations, in pencil, to the text and margins. Bound in publisher's original deep salmon ribbed cloth with fine gilt and blind stamping, all edges gilt, original yellow-coated endpapers. Externally in excellent order, with crisp stamping and the gilt very bright. The binding strong and handsome, with hinges firm and gutters intact. A couple of tiny losses, which can be seen in the images. Professionally recased, which has been expertly done. Internally, it remains very bright throughout. An excellent copy of the classic Christmas story, and rare in this edition, and in the original cloth. Written by Dickens during a period when the British were exploring and re-evaluating past Christmas traditions, including carols, and newer customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. He was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of other authors including Washington Irving. The novella captured the mid-Victorian revival of the Christmas holiday. Dickens acknowledged the influence of the modern Western observance of Christmas, and in turn, his novella would go on to later influence several aspects of Christmas traditions, including family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games and a festive generosity of spirit.
