Description: Baluster form Boch Freres vase by Belgian master Charles Catteau; 1930. Extremely rare polychrome design of strongly stylized swallows diving downwards into Cubist inflected aquamarine waves, moorings, and boats. This is one of Catteau's more daring Modernist designs which, despite its abstracting tendencies, still preserves it's references to the natural world. Catteau joined Boches Freres in 1906 and provided crucial leadership as the company sought a more artistic orientation. Catteau's designs are enormously varied and inventive. Certain elements of this vase, it's pervasive craqueleur, the subtle black outlining of the designs, are common features of most of his work for KERAMIS. His best work (this compact 'middleweight' vase, for example) is on a par with the best Art Deco design of the 1930s. All pottery and glass will be double boxed for shipping.
