Description: CDV, photo of print, "TOM THUMB FAMILY", actor & comedian showman Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-1883) at Barnum's American Museum & wife, Lavina Warren (1841-1919) with a "borrowed" baby, ca1860s. Named, obviously because of small stature, for the early English folktale character from the 1621, "Tom Thumb". When brought in to P.T. Barnum's American Museum at the age of 4, he was given the name "General Tom Thumb". He and eventually his wife, also of diminutive height, toured the world and became famous for his comedy and musical routines and, apparently, her fashion sense. According to various historical sources, the child in this image was one of many pictured at various times - each "borrowed" from a local orphanage in the city in which they were appearing. The CDV photo has light wear at edges and corners; very skinny "split" from top down about 1 1/2" in middle of image. Domestic buyer pays $4.50 S&H.
