Description: These beads were made in Italy. The duller (more pinkish) red color indicatesthey were made pre-1860 because the color was manufactured by including a verysmall amount of gold. The brighter redcolors indicate post 1860 when it was discovered that selenium, instead ofgold, could be added and produce a more intense red color. “Carnelline” refersto the beadmakers efforts to imitate the color of carnelian. Aleppo was a major African port into whichthe beads were brought so Africans referred to the beads as “carnelian fromAleppo”. ~55- 58 beads per strand. ~21” – 24”.
